My response to dignited blog – Kampala has least girl geeks in Africa.

I read this blog post here: http://www.dignited.com/9914/according-research-kampala-shockingly-fewest-number-girl-geeks-africa/

According to this blog post, Kampala has the least number of girl geeks in Africa. As I read this report I was wondering what informed this research. It says the basis was  the She Leads Africa Info Graphic, which was informed by the number of entries from each country for the call  for applications received from all over Africa. Reading the info Graphics, It doesn’t say  anything about graphics on women technologists, girl geeks  but women entrepreneurs in general. So this title is insulting to the growing number of initiatives that are supporting growth of women technologists, women tech entrepreneurs in Uganda.

My understanding is that the info graphics She Leads Africa put up is about women entrepreneurship and not necessarily just women in Tech entrepreneurs. http://techcabal.com/2014/08/14/african-female-entrepreneurs-numbers-leads-africa-publishes-survey/

The info from this (dignited) blog I find is misleading and discouraging to the young women that are aspiring for tech careers and businesses.

On women technologists in Uganda, both as entrepreneurs, tech professionals/girl geeks, I would use statistics from the number of women in tech organizations, women owned tech companies and social innovations by women.  If this blog was posted 5 years ago, I would not have hard an opinion in the matter, but being one of the women in Uganda leading a tech social enterprise( WITU) aimed at increasing women in tech professionals, users and entrepreneurs, I have my ear on the ground on what women are doing in tech not just in Uganda but in Africa as a whole.  I would not place Uganda before Nigeria and Kenya on this list, but I would place it before so many other African countries.

A year ago, Asikananetwork from Zambia, crowd sourced african women techies and they got a good response from all over Africa,

https://womentechafrica.crowdmap.com/

You will find Uganda has a good number of women tech owned/Led businesses and associations  like Blu Flamingo, Kola Studios, Jaguza, page’s lab, girl geeks Kampala, WOPA, Afchix, Wougnet and Women In Technology Uganda.

The numbers are still small but growing every day. I am proud of all efforts we are making towards a Zero Technological Gender Gap in Uganda. Keep going ladies and gents supporting!
